Riding safely on Sharelyft
Sharing a car with someone new asks for trust. Here is exactly what we do, and what we ask you to do.
Driver verification
Any driver can post a ride, but the verified badge is earned. To be verified a driver must upload all four documents and have them reviewed by our team:
- A valid Kenyan driving licence
- Current motor vehicle insurance
- The vehicle logbook or registration
- A clear photo of the driver
Documents are stored privately and are only visible to reviewers. If something is unclear the driver is told why and can re-upload. You can filter search results to verified drivers only.
Contacts stay private until you both commit
Phone numbers are never shown on a ride listing. Contact details and in-app chat unlock only after the driver accepts your request and both sides have paid the flat KES 50 connection fee. That single step removes almost all spam and time-wasting.
Before you travel
- Agree the fare, the pickup point and the departure time in writing, in the chat.
- Share the ride details and the driver's name with someone you trust.
- Check the number plate matches what the driver told you before you get in.
- Add an emergency contact in your settings so it is one tap away.
- Trust your instincts — you are never obliged to take a ride you are not comfortable with.
Money
Sharelyft only ever charges the KES 50 connection fee, and only through Paystack inside the app. The fare itself is settled directly between you and the driver. Nobody from Sharelyft will ever call or text you asking for a payment, a PIN, or an M-Pesa transaction reversal.
Reporting a problem
If a ride goes wrong, a driver behaves badly, or a listing looks fake, email support@sharelyft.com with the ride details. We review reports and can remove listings and accounts. In an emergency, contact the Kenyan police on 999 or 112 first.
